CompARTE is an affiliate of the El Paso Community Foundation whose mission is to make a broad spectrum of art disciplines accessible to the community, to create new public works, and to preserve and celebrate arts of our community to illuminate our past and inform our future.
CompARTE director Jesus “CIMI” Alvarado began his artistic career as a graffiti artist in El Paso. His footprint can be found throughout the city’s historic Segundo Barrio and beyond. His work is rooted entirely to the community he’s working in at a particular time. His process usually includes elements of community brainstorming and participation within the creation of each public work. In the same vein as Chicano muralists who have come before him – like his former teacher at Bowie High School, Gaspar Enriquez – his art is truly public, honoring the everyday Chicanx population that strengthens border culture in El Paso. The power of both contemporary and historic Chicanx figures is the driving force behind much of CIMI’s work. CIMI received the 2021 El Paso Inc. Community Spirit Award for his efforts.
Current project
compARTE is presently seeking funding to create a new mural at the Boys & Girls Clubs of El Paso in the heart of Segundo Barrio. Although designs are not yet finalized, this mural is intended to depict the civil rights movement as it played out in El Paso.
We have begun to research the movement in-depth, and have further involved community members who were active leaders in it. Many of these leaders remain active in social justice work, or work as educators. We are grateful for the opportunity to paint on the Boys & Girls Clubs of El Paso, and already have the support of the Southside Neighborhood Association, among other community stakeholders.
Funds donated to compARTE for this and other mural projects generally would be allocated to cover operational costs of installing the mural (lifts, scaffolds, etc).
Additionally, knowing personally the struggles facing contemporary artists, we are fully committed to paying artists competitive stipends for contracting them to assist in the mural process.
Be a part of our mission and donate today!
