Benjamin Alire Sáenz was more than an acclaimed author; he was a storyteller whose work brought the life of our region to readers around the world. Through his poetry, novels and children’s books, he captured the beauty, complexity, and humanity of the communities he loved while earning national and international acclaim. He was the first Latino writer to receive the prestigious PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, making history while elevating voices from the U.S.-Mexico border.

He believed in the power of stories to build understanding, foster belonging, and remind us of our shared humanity. His generosity, compassion, and unwavering belief in the importance of local voices will continue to inspire generations to come.

Created at Ben’s request, the Benjamin Alire Sáenz Literary Fund has been established to support the development of a literary festival in El Paso, investing in authors and the literary arts. The fund will carry forward Ben’s vision and inspire future generations through programs and opportunities that celebrate storytelling.
