Michael Bustillos Scholarship Fund

Michael Bustillos’ family will tell you that one of his many talents was the ability to listen. His ears tuned in early to dulcet sounds of the saxophone. Always a good student, Michael studied music at UT Arlington and received his degree in music education with the goal of being the best. He attended Eastwood High School, practicing his chops alongside two other talented saxophonists who were friends and competitors. Persistence paid off as Michael earned a chair in the All-Region band in his sophomore, Junior and senior year. In 1998, Michael went on to marry his high school sweetheart, Carisa and became the assistant band director at the Bryan Adams High School in Dallas.

Diagnosed with epilepsy, Michael underwent brain surgery in May 2007 to alleviate the seizures associated with his disease. Six months later, a seizure caused Michael to crash his car. He died at the age of 27.

His family heard their call and established the Michael C. Bustillos Scholarship Fund in the El Paso Community Foundation. It awards scholarships to students majoring in music education.
