My work plays with order and confusion. Each piece incorporates this through aperiodic tessellation, or the repetition of shapes through translational symmetry. This tessellation is structured and even comforting, but this structure transforms and morphs as the viewer moves around the piece, collapsing their perspective from order to confusion. This is both mesmerizing and conflicting. I use steel for its ability to capture these rigid structural forms and planer shapes. Even though these lines are static they are simultaneously dynamic. As the viewers gaze moves across the form new kaleidoscopic shapes form and disappear. In some pieces I have also used wood, this offers additional possibilities for layering imagery, pattern, and relief. The condensation of these layers fragments the possibility of identifying images, creating confusion but also generates a desire for understanding. The pairing of these layers with the complex structural steel forms all add to further overload the viewer’s perspective, granting a mesmerizing complexity and a desire for order amidst the chaotic sculptural patterns. Gemini, is a tangent of my exploration with aperiodic tessellation. Unlike my past sculptures, Gemini is built with sheet steel. Physically capturing space and visual weight. There are over 300 symmetrical planes to create a form that is both complex and simple.
