El Paso notables record messages for Class of 2020

El Paso Matters is partnering with the El Paso Community Foundation and Barracuda PR to offer a unique celebration of El Paso high school students in the Class of 2020.

Known as Commencement 2020, it features more than 30 prominent El Pasoans, who recorded special messages for the Class of 2020. Their videos will roll out over the next two weeks on, the digital news site founded by award-winning journalist Robert Moore.

These students have persevered under unimaginable circumstances. Their senior year began days after a mass shooting in El Paso that killed 23 people, then was disrupted by the coronavirus global pandemic. The seniors were resilient and managed to complete their high school educations in daunting conditions.

“This graduating class missed out on so many senior year traditions. We wanted to remind them how much El Paso treasures who they are and what they’ve accomplished,” said Moore, CEO of El Paso Matters.

The videos feature an Academy Award winner, a Grammy Award winner, a best-selling author, social justice leaders, entrepreneurs, elected officials, a retired general, a former astronaut, sports figures, and others.

The first videos were posted June 7, and include messages from University of Texas at El Paso President Emerita Dr. Diana Natalicio, New York Giants lineman and UTEP graduate Will Hernandez, musician Jim Ward, and KVIA co-anchor Stephanie Valle.

Videos will be posted weekdays through June 19 at and its social media platforms. El Paso Matters is a member-supported, nonpartisan media organization. Go to to donate.
