Basketball in the Barrio benefit with AYB
May 29, 2017
This is one benefit that should be a slam dunk.
Popular ’90s rockers AYB have agreed to reunite for a special benefit for Basketball in the Barrio, a program that teaches leadership, literary and basketball skills to children in the Segundo Barrio and Chamizal areas.
The concert will be from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday, June 15 at Geogeske, commonly known as G2, at 2701 N. Stanton.
Tickets are $100 each. One ticket is good for two admissions. Go to epcf.org/give/donate to purchase tickets.
Proceeds from ticket sales will go to establish a permanent endowment fund for Basketball in the Barrio in the El Paso Community Foundation.
Now in its 26th year, Basketball in the Barrio is designed to teach more than dribbling and passing. It incorporates music, dance, storytelling and art from the border region. Cost is $1 per child. Every child who participates gets a t-shirt, a peace poster, a book from El Paso’s Cinco Punto Press and ice cream from El Paso’s Price’s Creameries.
This year’s Basketball in the Barrio camp will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16-18 at the Armijo Recreation Center, 700 E. 7th Avenue.
Basketball in the Barrio is under the umbrella of Athletes United for Peace and is operated as a nonprofit through the El Paso Community Foundation. It was founded and is directed by former basketball coach, author and NMSU writing professor Rus Bradburd.
